There is a step between chatting and meeting that a lot of people skip, and it is the most useful one: a short video call.
Twenty minutes on a call tells you more than two weeks of messages. You find out whether the person matches their photos, whether the conversation flows when neither of you can edit your replies, and whether you actually want to spend an evening with them. For couples in different cities or countries, it is often the whole relationship for a while.
It is also the moment many people dread. It does not need to be.
Why it is worth doing
It confirms the person is real. A live call is the single most reliable way to rule out a fake profile. Photos can be borrowed. A face responding to you in real time cannot.
It shows you the chemistry. Some people who write brilliantly are flat in conversation. Others who send one-line replies turn out to be warm and funny on a call. You cannot tell which from text.
It saves time and money. A call that does not click costs twenty minutes. A first date that does not click costs an evening, the travel and the dinner.
Suggesting it
When
Once you have had a few days of good conversation and you are thinking about meeting, suggest a call first. Earlier is fine too. The longer you leave it, the more of an idea of someone you build up, and the bigger the gap can feel if they turn out to be different.
How
Keep it light and specific:
“I’m enjoying this. Fancy a quick video call this week? Twenty minutes, no pressure. Thursday or Saturday evening?”
Offering a short call with two concrete times makes it easy to say yes. If you are in different time zones, which is common for NRI matches, offer a time that works at both ends rather than asking one person to call at midnight.
Use a link, not a number
You do not need to swap phone numbers to video call. A Google Meet or Zoom link works on any phone and keeps your number private until you have decided you want to share it. For a first call that is a sensible default, and nobody reasonable will mind. If a match is pushing hard for your number before any call at all, our post on matches who want to move to WhatsApp straight away is worth a read.
Setting it up without overthinking it
A few small things make a noticeable difference:
- Light in front of you, not behind you. Sitting with a window at your back turns you into a silhouette. Face the window or a lamp instead.
- Camera at eye level. Prop your phone on a few books rather than holding it below your chin.
- Somewhere quiet. Not a busy café, not in a car, and ideally not from bed.
- Headphones if you have them. They cut out echo and make it easier to hear each other properly.
- A drink in hand. Chai or coffee gives your hands something to do and makes it feel more like a meeting than an interview.
Dress as you would for a relaxed first date. You are not presenting. You are having a conversation.
What to talk about
The good news is that you are not starting from nothing. Pick up the threads from your messages: the trip they mentioned, the dish from their home state they were defending, the work deadline they were nervous about.
A few topics work well on almost any first call:
- Their city. What brought them there, what they like, what they miss.
- Home. Where they grew up, what their family is like, how often they go back.
- Food. Endlessly easy, especially across regional cuisines.
- Weekends. What they actually do with their time tells you a lot.
- Plans. What they are looking forward to, at work or outside it.
Ask follow-up questions, and answer with a little more than you were asked. A call where both people are curious almost always goes well.
Some things are better left for later: the full story of your last relationship, salaries, and detailed marriage timelines in the first five minutes. It is fine for what you are each looking for to come up, and our post on how to ask what someone is looking for covers how to do that naturally. Just do not make it the agenda.
Silences are normal. They feel longer on a screen than they are.
What to notice
Good signs
They look like their photos. They ask you questions as well as answering yours. The person on the call is recognisably the person from the messages. And at some point you notice that you have stopped thinking about the call itself.
Warning signs
Most first calls are uneventful. A few things are worth noticing, though.
- The camera never works. Once is a bad connection. Every time is a pattern.
- You never quite see them. The face is always half in shadow, the video freezes at convenient moments, or it looks oddly smooth and does not react to what you say. Recorded clips and heavy filters exist, and they cannot answer a spontaneous question.
- The details do not match. They say it is evening in Toronto, and there is bright daylight behind them. Small inconsistencies like this deserve a gentle question.
- Pressure towards anything intimate. End the call. Screens can be recorded, and a request like this on a first call is a known route into blackmail.
None of this needs to be confrontational. If something feels off, you can simply end the call politely and think about it afterwards.
Ending the call well
End on a high rather than letting it fade. If it went well, say so and suggest the next step while you are both enjoying it: “This was really nice. Would you like to meet for coffee next weekend?”
If it did not click, you do not need to decide on the spot. A message afterwards is kinder and easier than a verdict on camera: “It was lovely talking to you, but I didn’t feel quite the connection I was hoping for. I wish you the best.” Our guide to handling rejection on dating apps covers the other side of that message.
When the call is the relationship for now
For couples in different countries, video calls are not a step on the way to meeting. For a while, they are the relationship.
That changes how you use them. Shorter, more frequent calls tend to work better than marathon sessions at the weekend. Doing something together on the call, such as cooking the same dish, watching the same film or walking through your neighbourhood, gives you shared memories rather than another update. Our guide to long-distance relationships for NRI couples goes into this in more detail.
A few safety basics
- Glance at your background before the call. A house number, a work badge or the view from your window can say more than you mean to.
- Keep your address, workplace and financial details back until you have met.
- Assume anything shown on camera could be recorded.
- Keep chatting on the dating app until you have met in person. If something goes wrong, that conversation is how you report the account.
Our online dating safety guide covers first meetings and what to do if something goes wrong.
The short version
Suggest a short video call before you meet, with two concrete times and a link rather than a phone number. Face the light, keep it to about twenty minutes, and talk about the things you were already talking about. Notice whether they are the person in their photos. Then end on a high and suggest the next step.
It is the cheapest, most useful twenty minutes in dating.
When you are ready to meet someone worth calling, NRI Meet is free on iOS and Android.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a first video call last?
Fifteen to thirty minutes is about right. Long enough to get a real sense of someone, short enough that it never runs out of steam. If it is going well, end on a high and arrange the next step rather than stretching it out.
Do I have to share my phone number for a video call?
No. A meeting link from Google Meet, Zoom or a similar service works on any phone and does not reveal your number. It is a sensible default for a first call with someone you have not met.
What if a match keeps refusing to video call?
Ask once more, simply, and then believe the pattern. Someone who chats warmly for weeks but always has a reason not to appear on camera is, in most cases, not the person in their photos.
Is it okay to ask someone to turn their camera on?
Yes. The point of a video call is to see each other. A genuine person will understand, and if their camera really is not working they will suggest another time rather than carrying on with audio only for weeks.
