Is Your Match Really Where They Say They Are?

Is Your Match Really Where They Say They Are?

You match with someone who says they live twenty minutes away. The profile says Toronto, the photos look like Toronto, and the conversation is easy. Then you notice that their messages always arrive at what would be three in the morning there, and that every plan to meet runs into a new delay.

When you date abroad, location matters more than it does at home. It decides whether you can meet next weekend or next year. It is part of what someone means when they say they are a fellow NRI in your city. And it is one of the most common things people lie about, because a nearby stranger feels safer than a distant one.

Most people are exactly where they say they are. This is about recognising the few who are not.

Why location matters more abroad

If you live in Melbourne and want to meet someone in Melbourne, a profile that says Melbourne is the main reason you started talking. If they are actually in another country, everything you have built on that, from plans to meet to the sense that they understand your life, rests on something false.

It also matters for safety. Someone who is genuinely in your city can be met in a public place, checked against mutual friends and community connections, and held accountable. Someone pretending to be nearby avoids all of that.

The honest reasons it can differ

Not every mismatch is a lie. Common honest explanations include:

  • They are travelling. For work, for a wedding, or on a long trip home.
  • They have just moved, or are about to, and set their profile to the new city.
  • They split their time between two places, such as a work city and a family home.
  • They are visiting family in India for a few weeks over the holidays.

The difference between these and a cover story is simple: genuine people mention it themselves, usually early, and the details stay the same every time.

Signs a story does not add up

None of these proves anything on its own. Together, they are worth taking seriously.

The time zone is wrong. Messages consistently arrive in the middle of their supposed night, or replies stop at times that only make sense somewhere else.

They are vague about local life. Ask about their neighbourhood, a favourite place to eat or how the commute was this week. People who live somewhere answer without thinking. People who do not give generic answers or change the subject.

They avoid video calls. The camera is broken, the connection is bad, they are shy, they are at work. Every reason is plausible once. A pattern is not.

The job keeps them away. Working on an oil rig, serving overseas, a doctor with an aid agency, an engineer on a ship. These are some of the most common stories in romance scams, because they explain both a good income and an inability to meet.

The photos look too polished. Professional, magazine-style photos with no ordinary snapshots can be lifted from someone else’s social media. A reverse image search with a tool such as Google Lens or TinEye takes a minute and can show where else a photo appears.

The plans keep collapsing. Every proposed meeting falls through for a new reason, often followed by a request for help: a flight, a visa fee, a customs charge, a medical bill.

How to check, kindly

You do not need to interrogate anyone. A few natural moves sort most people out.

Talk about where you live. Ask about their area, a local event or the weather this week. If you share a city, mention a place you both should know.

Suggest a short video call. Ten or fifteen minutes is enough. It confirms the person matches their photos, and the background often confirms the rest. Our guide to the first video call with a match covers how to suggest one without making it awkward.

Ask directly if something feels off. “Your messages always come in late at night your time. Are you travelling at the moment?” A genuine person will explain easily. Someone with something to hide will get defensive or vague.

Stay on the app until you are confident. Moving to WhatsApp or another app too early removes the protection of reporting. Our post on when a match wants to move to WhatsApp explains why this matters.

What not to share while you are unsure

Until you have met, or at least had a video call:

  • Do not share your home address, workplace or daily routine.
  • Do not send photos of documents such as your passport, visa or ID.
  • Do not share financial details or move money for any reason.
  • Do not send intimate photos.

None of this is rude. Someone who is genuine will understand, and many will be doing the same.

If you think you are talking to a fake

Stop replying to requests for money or personal information. Do not confront them with everything you have noticed, because a scammer will simply adjust the story. Report the profile on the app, even if you are not completely sure, because the same account is almost certainly talking to other people.

If you have already sent money or are being threatened, our online dating safety guide covers what to do next.

The short version

Location matters more when you date abroad, and it is one of the easiest things to fake. Notice the time zone, ask about ordinary local life and suggest a video call early. Honest reasons for a mismatch come up early and stay consistent. Stories about overseas jobs, constant delays and requests for money do not.

Most of your matches will pass all of this without noticing they were checked. That is exactly how it should be.

Frequently asked questions

Why would someone lie about their location on a dating app?

Most often to run a scam. Claiming to live in the same country as you makes a stranger seem safe and nearby, and a story about working overseas explains why they can never meet. Occasionally people also set their location to a city they are about to move to, which is not dishonest if they say so.

How can I tell where a match really lives?

Ask about ordinary local life, notice when their messages arrive compared with their time zone, and suggest a short video call. Genuine people talk easily about where they live and are happy to show it. Someone who is not where they claim usually avoids all three.

Is it a red flag if a match is travelling or recently moved?

Not on its own. People travel for work, visit family and relocate all the time. What matters is whether they tell you, whether the story stays consistent and whether they are willing to video call. A genuine explanation comes early and does not change.

What should I do if I think a match is lying about where they are?

Stop sharing personal details, do not send money for any reason, and report the profile on the app. Reporting helps even if you are not sure, because the same account is usually talking to other people.
